Washington State Public Health Association Professional Service Awards


Our public health workforce works tirelessly to protect the public from hazards they may never see.  Appreciate your colleagues through WSPHA's Awards Program.

Through its annual awards program, WSPHA recognizes those who give of themselves in service of the public.  WSPHA members may nominate fellow public health champions by August of each year (not all awards categories require recipients to be WSPHA members).  Award recipients are selected by the WSPHA Awards Committee and awards are made at the annual Joint Conference on Health.   For more information on the awards process and information about awards categories, please contact us and see the

AWARD CATEGORIES AND PAST RECIPIENTS:

WSPHA President's Award
This award recognizes a citizen who is not a public health official and who has demonstrated interest in promoting the holistic approach to the achievement of health. For example, this lay person may have served on various health agency boards or councils in the community, or may have volunteered time toward helping aggregate groups realize health.


Annual Public Health Leader Award
The Annual Award was established in 1959 to recognize outstanding leadership and achievement in public health in Washington State. It is awarded in response to particular contributions to health in the state. The recipient must at some time have been a resident of Washington, but need not be employed by a health agency or be a member of the Association.  In 2006 the award was renamed the Annual Public Health Leader Award.

Tom Drummey Memorial Award
The WSPHA Tom Drummey Memorial Award is the highest award that is presented by this Association in recognition of the achievements and accomplishments of one of its members. This award was created in 1979 in recognition of Tom Drummey's leadership in WSPHA. It honors an individual who has demonstrated continuing interest in, and support of, WSPHA activities. The nominee must be a present or past member of the Association and resident of Washington State.

Mike Dickey Memorial Award
This award was created in 1990 in memory of Mike Dickey a Health Planning with the Washington State Department of Health. The award is presented to an individual whose health planning efforts to improvement in health, health planning or health services in Washington State.

WSPHA Honorary Life Membership Award
The Honorary Life Membership Award is presented to a person who has been active with the Washington State Public Health Association for a number of years. The Association can depend upon this person to give of his or her talents to promoting public health throughout Washington State.

Emerging Public Health Leader Award
:  This award, created in 2006, recognizes the competence and activities of WSPHA members who are at the beginning of their public health careers.  It honors individuals who support the promotion of public health through demonstrating leadership in advocacy, research, education, management, cultural competency, and/or other areas related to the profession.  Individuals will be relatively new to the field of public health, with approximately seven years or less in public health practice.  The recipient must be a present or past member of WSPHA and a resident of Washington State.
