Dr. Ivo Garrido graduated from Unversidade Eduardo Mon dlane with an MD degree in 1986. He was the President of the Association of Surgeons of East Africa in 1995 and Minister of Health of Mozambique from 2005-2010. Dr. Garrido was the President of the World Health Assembly in 20 06. Dr. Garrido will share a sense of reality on the ground and give a uniq ue perspective on Alma-Ata from the 1970s, when Mozambique and other countr ies were creating their own pathways to primary health care (PHC). As a phy sician and as former Minister of Health, Dr. Garrido offers a critical pers pective on current approaches to global health by high-income countries, do nor dependence and donor-funded vertical programs in low income countries.< /p>
About the Stephen Stewart Gloyd Endowed Lecture p>
The Gloyd Lecture was originally established in 1982 by Professor Lynn Staheli of Children’s Medical Center to honor his mentor, Dr. Park G loyd. In 2001, Park Gloyd endowed the lectureship as the Stephen Stewart G loyd Endowed Lectureship to honor his son, Dr. Steve Gloyd, who was a pione er in global health at the UW. Steve is Professor of Global Health and Heal th Services, and adjunct Professor in Epidemiology, Family Medicine, Indust rial and Systems Engineering, and the Evans School of Public Affairs. Stev e created, in 1987, the International Health Program in the School of Publi c Health, and has been a longstanding global champion of social justice and equity. He has been the recipient of many awards, including the 38th UW Fa culty Lecturer, the UW-wide Distinguished Teaching Award, and the 2010 Bars ky Award for courageous and effective advocacy for human rights – sel ected by the American Public Health Association Physician’s Forum. p>
